What Does 'Notary For' Mean On The Certificate?

New Hotline Resized 3I just performed an acknowledgment but under my signature line it reads, "Notary For" and then had an open space. Is that only if you have an employer? — M.K., Nebraska

It is likely that the space following the line “Notary For” should be completed by entering your jurisdiction (which in your case is the state of Nebraska); the Notary’s job title or position should not be entered in the certificate.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

Good question. When you have seen a lot of loans you will see the wording a little bit differently: Notary for the State of _______, County of ______ . Sometimes THAT wording is in the notarial section of most of the documents in the package, but not all. If they don't ask for it, don't volunteer it. You may, however, print your name under your signature. Be sure to watch to see if they WANT you to do this. Again, don't volunteer what is NOT asked for. The client wants what the client wants. As long as the client isn't asking for illegalities, always follow their directions. I had to have one loan resigned, at My expense, bc I had everyone sign in the wrong color ink.

It's important to be knowledgeable about these things. I once worked for a rather stubborn manager who became a notary in order to notarize documents for the company, and didn't bother learning any of the rules involved in practicing as a notary public. In the "Residing at _____" section, she wrote the name of the business! LOL!

When in doubt - pick up the phone and ask. I have never had anyone say to me - Dude you are really stupid. Most vendors appreciate your asking in order to keep errors to a minimum. It only takes a minute and you won't get the file back for revision.
